the post-soviet

This collection of paintings, done throughout my time at OCAD U, explore the meaning of a 'post-soviet' aesthetic.
Making use of long-saved photographs, wallpaper, and still-life, I'm looking to unpack the inherited material consciousness observed in my home. I experiment with colour, mark making and grounds to see how these elements speak to each other.
By looking at these warm, tacky and mundane materials - I am inquiring into the transposition of my parent's life in Soviet-era Moscow into their present life in suburban Toronto.
This inquiry has been the primary aesthetic inspiration behind my newest animated work - USSR Story.
